Smoke Bitten by Patricia Briggs

SmokeBittenShockingly, I was disappointed when I first learned that Patricia Briggs was going to write urban fantasy instead of fantasy. I was already a fan and read her fantasy novels. The urban fantasy market was bloated and repetitious in my mind. But Patricia Briggs is a superior writer, and she has a fresh, exciting urban fantasy series. Smoke Bitten is the twelfth book in the Mercy Thompson series, and I eagerly anticipate more books. The series that has not grown stale with age. The characters grow and develop. The plot is full of action and twists. There is both European and Native American mythology invoked.  Then there is Mercy Thompson,  who has a unique style.

Mercy Thompson is an auto mechanic with an unusual genealogy. Her father is Coyote, the eternal trickster. As a result, Mercy can change into a coyote at will. This development came as a major shock to her mother, who found a coyote puppy in the crib. Feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of raising a baby who can turn into a coyote, her mother took Mercy to be raised by a group of werewolves.

Being raised by werewolves didn’t make it any easier for Merry when she married Adam, the alpha of the tri-city pack. Many of the pack still resented Merry.  Merry could handle the cranky werewolves, but something is bothering her husband. He had shut down their mating bond. Mercy must manage the more resentful members of the pack and figure out what is bothering her husband.

But in the meanwhile, she must deal with a supernatural invader from Underhill. This creature can take the form of smoke. Its bite enables the monster to control the body and mind of the victim. The supernatural escapee then murders in the body of its victims. The casualty rate is rising. Worse, it can control more than one victim at the same time.  Even worse, it can attack the supernatural as well as humans. Mercy must handle it. For some reason, Mercy is immune to the bite of the smoke monster. Yet  Mercy has no superpowers, other than she can only turn into a coyote and engage in some mischievous payback.

Throughout this series, there have been challenges and resulting character development for the main characters. Mercy is hard-working and compassionate. She is respectful, but she takes no guff. In this book, Mercy has marital issues, but she doesn’t share this information. It is refreshing to read about a romance involving mature adults. But this book isn’t about Mercy so much as the other around her. Adam, the alpha wolf, has an issue. Mercy can help him only so far with this issue. In the end, he must resolve it.

The action is non-stop and fascinating.  There are hints concerning the future of other characters in the book. In particular, I am expecting some exciting developments for both Tad and Jessie. By the end of the story, the reader has enjoyed a satisfying mix of adventure, action, mystery, and romance. Patricia Briggs could write twelve more books in this series, and I will gladly read them all.

My collection of Patricia Brigg novels are below. I can’t locate my copy of Smoke Bitten. I had to hide from my cat which was chewing on it. PatriciaBriggs

“Everyone needs to read this book. ”

Photo Jun 22, 4 45 13 AM

I have been seriously neglecting this blog. I will be posting some reviews in the near future, including one for Broken Knight.  It is sitting on my kindle, demanding to be read.

– Harloe Rae, USA Today bestselling author.

Broken Knight, an all new standalone about first loves, betrayal and loss from USA Today bestselling author L.J. Shen, is available now!

Not all love stories are written the same way. Ours had torn chapters, missing paragraphs, and a bittersweet ending.

Luna Rexroth is everyone’s favorite wallflower.

Sweet.

Caring.

Charitable.

Quiet.

Fake.

Underneath the meek, tomboy exterior everyone loves (yet pities) is a girl who knows exactly what, and who, she wants—namely, the boy from the treehouse who taught her how to curse in sign language.

Who taught her how to laugh.

To live.

To love.

Knight Cole is everyone’s favorite football hero.

Gorgeous.

Athletic.

Rugged.

Popular.

Liar.

This daredevil hell-raiser could knock you up with his gaze alone, but he only has eyes for the girl across the street: Luna.

But Luna is not who she used to be. She doesn’t need his protection anymore.

When life throws a curveball at All Saints’ golden boy, he’s forced to realize not all knights are heroes.

Sometimes, the greatest love stories flourish in tragedy.

Excerpt:

Right now I wanted to just be here in silence with my best friend. And somehow, I don’t know how, but Luna sensed it. So we sat there for what felt like two hours but was probably a lot less, until I opened my eyes again. Her eyes were closed, too. I watched her for a while.

When she opened her eyes, it felt like she took something away from me.

“Let’s jump,” she said.

“I’m quite fond of my limbs, Moonshine.”

“Stop being such a big baby.”

“Big, quarterback baby who just finished a football season in one piece and would like to keep all his body parts intact.”

She crawled out of the treehouse and settled on the branch. It was thick, but I doubted it could carry my muscular ass for more than a few seconds before snapping. I rolled my eyes and settled next to her. She slipped her hand in mine.

“Three, two, one.”

It was a short, sweet way down.

Sleeping Beauty? Romeo and Juliet? The Kiss Thief by L.J. Shen Is A Sexy Romance Full of Evocative References to Classic Themes.

The Kiss Thief took me by surprise. This is partly due to my mistaken belief that it was a historical romance. It is not. It is set firmly in the 21st Century. But there is definitely a Romeo and Juliet vibe with the sweet, first love between Francesca Rossi and Angelo Bandini. Like Romeo and Juliet, this story begins with a masquerade. Francesca is a sleeping beauty. Sheltered and controlled by her mafia father, she is a good, obedient Catholic school girl, waiting for her first kiss.

But there are more romances tropes in which to delight. This story has a forced marriage, a plot for revenge, and an obsessive love. There is even a nosy housekeeper, who knows everything ala Rebecca. There are several betrayals. This story had few surprises, but it did provide a delightful, fresh twist on old themes.

Two men want Francesca, her childhood friend and first love, Angelo, and Senator Wolfe Keaton. Senator Wolfe Keaton drags this story into the dark romance realm. Unlike Angelo, Wolfe is far older and more jaded than Francesca. His feelings for Francesca are not sweet. Yet neither rival could be described as a villain.

This book has all the sizzle and sexual tension that a reader can expect from Ms. Shen. Her characters will evolve. The only criticism I have is Shen’s failure to develop a sense of place for Chicago. It is a minor complaint. But as a former Chicagoan, I was disappointed by such a bland description of the city that works. But as I said, this is a minor complaint. Otherwise, this is a satisfying romance.

The Kiss Thief Full Jacket

This is a must read for me.  L.J. Shen is a fabulous writer and this is her first historical romance. So far, everything about this book is perfection. The title is enticing. The cover is beautiful. Need  I say that the romance trope of an arrange marriage is one of my favorites.

Blurb
They say your first kiss should be earned.

Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky.

They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred.

Mine were broken before we left church.

They say your heart only beats for one man.

Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.

I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit.

Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

They say that all great love stories have a happy ending.

I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter.

One kiss.

Two men.

Three lives.

Entwined together.

And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

Strong by Kylie Scott My Review

strongreleaseStrong_RDL_Banner

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kylie Scott comes a new story in her Stage Dive series…

When the girl of your dreams is kind of a nightmare.

As head of security to Stage Dive, one of the biggest rock bands in the world, Sam Knowles has plenty of experience dealing with trouble. But spoilt brat Martha Nicholson just might be the worst thing he’s ever encountered. The beautiful troublemaker claims to have reformed, but Sam knows better than to think with what’s in his pants. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to make his heart fall into line.

Martha’s had her sights on the seriously built bodyguard for years. Quiet and conservative, he’s not even remotely her type. So why the hell can’t she get him out of her mind? There’s more to her than the Louboutin wearing party-girl of previous years, however. Maybe it’s time to let him in on that fact and deal with this thing between them.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

My Review

If you have read the Stage Dive series (and if not, you should read the Stage Dive series), you are aware that Martha is a nightmare. Martha was on top of the world, the beautiful girlfriend of world-renowned songwriter and musician. Then she cheats on her famous boyfriend with his bandmate and brother.  Fortunately, she doesn’t manage to break up the band and the ex-boyfriend, Davie, writes a hugely popular album about his heartbreak. But Martha isn’t done. In the first Stage Dive novel, Lick, she tries to break up the marriage of her ex-boyfriend with the help of her brother, Ben. Since Ben is the bass player of the band, this also causes tension in the band again. Yet Martha is unstoppable. In Deep, Martha tries to stop the marriage of her brother, Ben, to his pregnant girlfriend.  Clearly, Martha has a destructive streak.

It would take a strong man to love Martha with her destructive tendencies. Fortunately, for Martha, Sam, the former Navy Seal and current bodyguard for the band, is just that man. He has been in love with Martha for ten years. But he has been waiting for her. He doesn’t state it, but he is waiting for her to mature.

After being gone for years, Martha is back on the West Coast. It is time for her to mend the damage done by her earlier antics. There is a sense of shame and awkwardness.  Strong is a hot sexy romance about two strong-willed characters. It also highlights the power of redemption and forgiveness. Moreover, it has everyone’s favorite characters from the series. I highly recommend this novella.

DH 5 never fallen inlove

An Excerpt To Whet Your Appetite

DH_EXCERPT

Dirty Headlines drops on September  7, 2018.  In anticipation of that event, here is an excerpt. Thank you to L.J. Shen and Social Butterfly P.R. for the excerpt.

Célian Laurent.

Manhattan royalty.

Notorious playboy.

Heir to a media empire.

…And my new boss.

I could have impressed him, if not for last month’s unforgettable one-night stand.

I left it with more than orgasms and a pleasant memory—namely, his wallet.

Now he’s staring me down like I’m the dirt under his Italian loafers, and I’m supposed to take it.

But the thing about being Judith “Jude” Humphry is I have nothing to lose.

Brooklyn girl.

Infamously quirky.

Heir to a stack of medical bills and a tattered couch.

When he looks at me from across the room, I see the glint in his eyes, and that makes us rivals.

He knows it.

So do I.

Every day in the newsroom is a battle.

Every night in his bed, war.

But it’s my heart at stake, and I fear I’ll be raising the white flag.

Excerpt:

He had an American accent. Not French. American.Smooth. Familiar. Ordinary. He fired out sentences at the speed of light. I heard him, but I couldn’t listen. Shock gripped my body as the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. My dirty one-night stand was my boss. My lying, American boss. And now I had to deal with that—hopefully for a very long time, because I desperately needed this job.

Someone snapped their fingers, and my gaze shot from Célian’s face to Grayson.

His forehead had crumpled into a frown. “You look like you’re trying hard not to cry or having a really intense orgasm. I’m hoping for you that it’s the latter and some kind of a weird-slash-awesome condition. You okay?”

I nodded, scraping up a smile. “Sorry. Zero orgasms happening under this dress. I just zoned out for a second.”Lies. I was about to orgasm just remembering how good Célian had felt parting my thighs with his big, callused hands and dipping his tongue into my slit.

Then words stopped streaming down on everyone’s heads like a scalding shower, and I realized that indeed there was something worse than hearing Célian speak in his perfect American English. And that was not hearing him speak at all. Because now the icicles were pointed at me like a cocked gun.

I glanced up to meet his gaze. He stared at me for exactly one second before his focus snapped to Grayson. “Am I understood, Gregory?” he asked.

Gregory?

“Crystal clear, sir,” Grayson bowed, his voice trembling at the edges.

Célian jerked his chin toward me. “Your cover girl material is going downhill.”

God. Damn. Bastard.

He recognized me, and I knew it. His eyes had kindled, melting the ice and growing darker the minute our gazes mingled. He remembered, and maybe it killed him that I was here in the same way it buried me.

I want my iPod back, my gaze told him. I had over three thousand songs on that thing, and they were all too good to be wasted on that jerk.

“Jude Humphry. Junior reporter. It’s her first day,” Grayson highlighted, almost pleadingly. He shifted in my direction, as if he might need to physically protect me from the sharp-tongued, suited monster.

I suppressed a smile when I realized I’d told Célian  my last name was Spears. Well, he certainly wasn’t a Timberlake. He was a Laurent. An American monarch through and through. A billionaire, a powerful force, and judging by our one and only encounter—a raging playboy.

This man was inside you, I internally shrieked. And not just once. His cock was buried so deep in you, you screamed. You can still taste the salty, earthy flavor of his cum.You know he has a freckle on his lower back. You know what sound he makes when he empties inside a woman.

I internally thanked my mind for ruining my panties in public, and nodded. “Pleasure to meet you, sir.” I offered him my hand, my face flushing with embarrassment at my choice of words.

Everyone was looking at us, and there were at least fifty people in the room. Célian—if that was even his name—ignored my outreached hand. Instead, he turned his face to the man beside him. “Mathias, any other words of wisdom?”

Mathias? Wasn’t that his father? Just how cold was the man with the icy blue eyes?

“I think you touched everything,” said the big boss—and he did have a heavy French accent, so at least the lie had a seed. Mathias stared at me placidly, like he could read the secret his son and I shared on my face.

Célian spun toward me, uncuffing his cufflinks and rolling his sleeves up his veiny forearms. “Accounting can go back to their unfortunate line of work. Couture is excused from this meeting—though not forgiven for their horrid blog. Miss Humphry?” He snapped his fingers impatiently.

He was already waltzing down the narrow hallway, knowing I’d chase him like a puppy, and no doubt taking pleasure in that fact.

“I have a bone to pick with you.”

Bone, boner—same difference, right?

I shot Grayson a please-save-my-butt look. His eyes said, I would but I still have a life to live.

I followed Célian down the hall, my Chucks slapping the floor in a hurry. He sliced through the throng of accountants, then stopped at a corner office, opened the door, barked “Out!” to the man inside, and tilted his head for me to go in. I did. He closed the door, and it was just the two of us.

Two feet of empty space between us.
